ʻālohilohi double bass (2023)

Commissioned by Gahlord Dewald, duration 7’

‘ālohilohi means “radiant” in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i. This piece explores radiance through various timbres: the radiance of shimmering overtones, the radiance of resonance/contact.

The score can be interpreted in two different ways (together, side by side, or one or the other). The first version is meant to be played through continuously over the seven pages, taking time to settle into the sound of one material, and transition to the next. The alternative version is presented as the last page of the score, with the material from the entire piece presented outside of time, overlapping on the page.

‘ālohilohi was developed during a residency at the Tusen Takk Foundation. tusentakk.org. Creation and development of the work was supported in part by the Bogliasco Foundation with the generous support of the Edward T. Cone Special Fellowship in Music.
