Casalmaggiore — viola ( / violin / cello) and fixed media (2016)

Casalmaggiore is one of my early works involving field recordings. The piece is inspired by the sound of particularly beautiful construction noise on the streets in a small town in Italy. As the recording wanders through the town, so is the performer instructed to wander between boxes of musical material, anticipating or mimicking the field recording as desired. The performer translates these sounds from everyday life onto traditional instruments using nontraditional playing methods.

Performance instructions: Wander between boxes (possible suggestions for timings are indicated). Anticipate or mimic the field recording as desired. Repeat or don’t repeat. Return or don’t return. All sounds should be relatively quiet and blend in with the volume of the fixed media.

Premiered March 14, 2018 at The Substation in Melbourne, Australia by Lanzilotti. Duration 7’

Violin version premiered May 14, 2018 at Metropolis Space, New York, by Nina C. Young.

Cello version for Paul Dwyer, 2020.
